And just like that, Summer falls into September! Even though it is still 2020, September feels like a fresh start. The new January. It marks the beginning of a new school year,  a new season, and the countdown to many holidays! There is a lot to celebrate, but today it is all about Zerina Selimović!

Zerina is our new full-time Software Developer on our PBXware team. She is currently studying at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Tuzla. In April 2019 she began her internship with Bicom Systems, and now that she is in her last semester of studies, she has accepted a full-time position!

Bicom Systems is actually Zerina’s first job! And after a long day of work,  you can find her unwinding by going for a run, bike ride, or walk. Check out this Q&A to learn why she chose to do an internship with us, what projects she is currently working on, and what a typical day looks like.

Internship with Bicom Systems

Why did you choose to do an internship at
Bicom Systems?

“A lot of friends started Internships at Bicom Systems before I did! At school on our lunch breaks, I would listen to their stories and experiences from Bicom Systems. I was fascinated by the projects they were working on and the challenges they were facing. When it came time to choose a company and apply for an internship, I knew I wanted to be a part of the Bicom Systems team!”

Describe what a typical day at Bicom Systems looks like.

“My workday starts with one (or two 😉) cups of coffee. Then I start my tasks or begin doing research. After lunch, I get prepared for the daily team meeting! In the meeting, we go over what we did the day before and share the tasks we worked on and our plans for the current day. After that, I usually carry on with my daily to-do’s”

What projects are you currently working on?

“At work, I am currently learning about our Touchless Provisioning feature and expanding my knowledge by learning new programming languages and practices. I also have to finish writing my thesis before graduation! The thesis topic will include Time Series Databases, so I hope that someday I will have the opportunity to apply that knowledge at work.

How do you manage to work from home and to be a student during the COVID-19 outbreak?

“At first, it was unusual for me to work from home! I spent most of my time in my room, studying or working. This semester was quite stressful for me, but working from home allowed me to be more effective in my responsibilities in college and at work! Even though I am used to working from home, I would still prefer to go back to the office because I miss my colleagues. 😔 Especially our games of Pictionary! 😂

What energizes you at work?

“Coffee, of course! But when I successfully complete a task or when I finally figure out how to fix a bug, I immediately get excited and energized!”

If you could choose a superpower, what would it be?

“This is a tough question haha! But if I had to choose, I would opt for that kind of superpower to read any book about Computer Science in 5 minutes and understand it. Then I would immediately apply it!”

Tell me something I didn’t know.

“Ever since I was little, I have always loved singing. In September of 2015, I became a member of the youth orchestra in Tuzla called BalsiKa. I am a singer in BalsiKa, and during my time with the orchestra, I had the opportunity to learn to play many instruments! Going to rehearsals every Saturday is something that helps me to unwind after a hard week.”

Intern at Software Company

Finally, what would you tell future interns or people thinking of applying for an internship?

“I would tell them to go for it! An internship is a perfect way to learn many things that you can not learn in college. You will have the opportunity to work with professionals and learn directly from them. You will see what it looks like when you are working on a real project and get familiar with the industry before becoming an employee!”
