A few weeks ago, we met Semir Omerović, an Associate Software Engineer at Bicom Systems. We learned about his transition from intern to employee, and the overall benefits of an internship. It was such a success, we decided to introduce more of our employees who began their journey with Bicom Systems as students. If you missed Semir’s story, click here.
This week in our series “From Intern to Employee” we have Lejla Hodžić! While continuing her studies at the University of Tuzla, Lejla started her internship with Bicom Systems in January 2017. In September 2018, she graduated top of her class with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and became an official employee. Even though she is employed full time, Lejla is currently working on her master’s degree!

What do you do at Bicom Systems?
“I am a Software Developer at Bicom Systems. Right now, I am working on two big projects TELCOware, and gloCOM Meeting. Both of them are very interesting and very significant! gloCOM Meeting is a new project that you will soon know more about.”
Why did you choose the telecommunications industry?
“I choose the telecommunications industry because it’s constantly growing! It offers a lot of opportunity for young people entering the workforce. Telecommunications is an important tool for businesses and I wanted to improve my skills in VoIP Communications. This industry never gets boring and every day I learn something new.”
How did you decide to do an internship at Bicom Systems?
“Bicom Systems actually came recommended to me by one of my professors! I heard from other interns that it was a great company to work for and the perfect place to improve my technical skills and get familiar with the telecommunications industry.”
What do you like best about working for Bicom Systems?
“I like working for Bicom Systems because I improve every single day. I learned so many new things like how to communicate and collaborate with my team, but also how to work independently. This company has really talented and hard-working people who you can learn a lot from.”
As mentioned earlier, you are working on your Master’s? How is working full time and completing your Master’s similar to when you were an intern and studying for your bachelor?
“Yes, I am currently working on my Master’s now. I can say it is not so easy and it takes time but it is so worth it! Working full time and completing my Master’s is pretty similar to when I was an intern and studying for my bachelor. The only difference is I have less time for learning on working days, so I reserve my weekends for that.”
How would your coworkers describe you?
“My colleagues would say that I am very optimistic. Where others see setbacks, I see opportunities to learn and grow! I think there is always a creative solution to a problem and I love searching for it.”
That is great! Where would you like to see yourself in five years?
“In five years I’d like to see myself still working in the telecommunications industry, but with much more knowledge, experience and advancement.”
Finally, what would you say to future interns or people thinking of applying for an internship?
“Joining a company as an intern gives you the opportunity to work hands-on in a professional environment. You have the chance to attend meetings and events that provide you with the building blocks you need for your future. I would recommend internships to everyone because they help set the foundation for your career!”
