Tell me about yourself!

“Hello World! My name is Tarik Omerćehajić, and I’m an Associate DevOps Engineer at Bicom Systems. I studied at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Tuzla. As my job title says, I’m part of the DevOps team here at Bicom Systems with a specialization in web technologies and front-end design.”

Why did you choose to do an internship with Bicom Systems?

“I was attending the Bicom Systems 2017 Hackathon and had the opportunity to meet a lot of awesome people who worked for the company! So, I thought it would be amazing if I could join the team.  After the Hackathon, I was contacted and offered the Internship and as you guessed it, I accepted!”

Tell me about your transition from Intern to Employee.

“I started my Internship as a Web Developer, creating the new company website. After a couple of months of working hard, we finally published a new, modern website for our company! (Check it out here) After I finished my work on the new website project, Nihad from the DevOps team reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in joining his team! And that’s where I am now.”

Were there any challenges that you had to overcome during this transition?

“Well… the hardest thing I had to get used to was coming to the office every day haha.”

So, what does a typical day look like for a DevOps Engineer?

“My day starts with a cup of coffee (maybe two), and then it is all about finishing tasks and attending the occasional meeting.”

How do you keep yourself organized?

I am a pretty old-fashioned person, so I still like to write down my tasks in a notebook and use sticky notes. In addition, I use different notification systems, so I don’t forget about the important tasks that I need to do during the day!”

What is the coolest project you are working on right now?

“Right now, I’m currently working on a new user interface for our Bicom Release Manager platform. It’s developed using the Vue.js framework and it is the first time I’ve worked with this framework! So it is pretty exciting for me since I have the chance to discover and learn new things every day.”

Do you have any favorite industry websites, books, or other resources?

I am subscribed to a couple of newsletter services, so that is my main provider to the latest tech news. I am also a huge fan of Smashing Magazine! There are a lot of interesting articles I read on there, and they have really interesting webinars.”

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Do you have any hobbies?

“I volunteer at the Tuzla Youth Theater, usually as a technician on theatre shows. I also really enjoy sports, so when I can, I usually play football, basketball, tennis or go hiking with my friends! When I am at home, I spend most of my time playing the guitar.”

Finally, what would you say to future interns or people thinking of applying for an internship?

“I would say, if you are eager to learn and gain new skills, an internship is a great opportunity to make it happen! You will have the opportunity to work on real projects, learn from the best, and meet a very large number of people who can help your future career.”
